![]() Hope Summers first appears (as Bertha Edwards) in “Andy and Opie, Housekeepers”, but her name changes to Bertha Johnson then Clara Edwards. The evil Ben Weaver first appears as a Scrooge character (and played by Will Wright) in Christmas Story. Otis Campbell shows up in “The Manhunt”, Floyd the Barber first appears in “Stranger in Town” but is played by Walter Baldwin…he is replaced by Howard McNear in “Mayberry Goes Hollywood” (but called Floyd Colby). There are a number of firsts in the show. There were some things I never knew (Barney is Andy’s cousin) and storylines that were developed and dropped included Andy’s girlfriend Ellie who disappeared forever after “The Guitar Player Returns” (it was decided that there was no chemistry between Griffith and Father Know’s Best veteran Donahue) and Floyd the Barber having a family. I’ve never been much of an Andy Griffith watcher so to sit back and see the show at its start is strange. The first season has some surprising moments. The first season of the show garnered an Emmy nomination for comedy and a win for Don Knotts as a Supporting Actor. Andy, Opie (played by Ron Howard), and Frances Bavier (not playing Aunt Bea but Henrietta Perkins) all appeared in the episode. The classic series with the whistling opening was originally previewed on The Danny Thomas Show on Februin an episode called “Danny Meets Andy Griffith”. The Andy Griffith Show-Season 1 aired from Octoto on CBS in black-and-white. Andy and Barney always seem to find trouble, be it with Andy’s girlfriend Ellie Walker (Elinor Donahue), criminals, or even movie producers and record producers. Together, Andy, Aunt Bea, and Opie find themselves dealing with small town problems and Andy’s over-excitable cousin and deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts). When Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) finds himself trying to raise his son Opie (Ron Howard), he calls in his Aunt Bea (Frances Bavier) for help. The answer is "nobody.Welcome to Mayberry, one of the nicest towns in the South. I'm tryin' to give you the name of the criminal and you won't accept it. Now, where'd I leave off?īarney: All right, D – who in their entire life ever got a bargain in Weaver's store?īarney: Ah, come on, Andy. ![]() ![]() Moments later the switch is still in the same position it was (down) before the lights came on.īarney: Well, play the game, play the game! I hate it when you get obtuse. When Andy comes into the store at night and finds Barney and Ben Weaver, he reaches for the light switch, and the lights come on even though he obviously does not move the switch.When a lady comes out of the store, Barney's ear is normal and his hat was adjusted. When Barney and Andy are outside of Weaver's at the end (when Barney is wearing a sporting overcoat and winter hat), Barney puts his own hat back on his right ear is folded down.The tie that Ben Weaver wears in this episode is the purple tie with acorns that Gomer buys for his date with Mary Grace Gossage in the episode " A Date for Gomer.".When Ben and Barney enter through the back door of Weaver's Dept Store there is a sign just to the right of the door that says, "Don't forget to feed the 'Kitty.’” This appears to have something to do with the coffee pot, maybe some kind of coffee fund.It is sometimes thought that Avery plays Ben Weaver's son, Ben Weaver Jr. Will Wright, the actor that played Ben Weaver in previous episodes, was replaced in this episode by Tol Avery due to Wright's death.Ron Howard (as Opie Taylor) does not appear in this episode.Frances Bavier is listed in the End Credits but does not appear in the episode.However, Andy has bumped into the old lady, and she "clanked.” Getting a scales from inside the store, they weigh her, and discover she was putting merchandise under a large over-sized trench coat. Barney targets a little old lady, and at first Ben thinks Barney is wrong. When all tactics fail, Barney decides to go undercover as a store mannequin and he confronts the thief. Barney investigates at night yet nothing but chaos is found when he runs into Ben Weaver and Asa Breeney, the night security man. He tells them that he is being robbed blind. While Andy investigates, Barney decides to go undercover to catch the crook(s).Īndy and Barney are patrolling (and gossiping) when Ben Weaver flags them over to his store. Ben Weaver complains to the Mayberry sheriff's office that merchandise has been disappearing from his department store. ![]()
